Murmurs

March 23th - April 20th Los Angeles, CA

“Ella Mae finds this romantic focus at the innate conjunction of fashion and art, with a recent pop-up and exhibition of clothing at LA’s Murmurs Gallery. The creation consisted of pieces hung in a circular formation around a centered pond oozing with a liquid dyed with madder root, built upon gravel, rocks, dirt, leaves, and branches. The ivory Magnolia dress suspended just barely above the surface of the simulated oasis, slowly changing its color to the deep-carmine dye that simmered below it.”

Custom installation soundscape designed by Juan Aguirre

“ Celebrating the spring equinox through Ella’s world, this ephemeral mix serves as a companion to the installation. Curating songs that captured the innocence, curiosity and playful nature in her clothes. Intentionally designed to envelope listeners in a blossoming season that brings forth warmth. Through field recordings of seasonal birds, layered with pastoral melodies, jovial flutes and compositions that champion change in an uncertain world.”

“Ella Mae creates an atmospheric immersion where garments hang from the boughs of trees and a pond bubbling in crimson anchors the room. The pool, laden with a dye bath made from tree root shavings, will gradually stain more of the dress each day, transforming the garment throughout the duration of the month-long installation. This living sculpture, encased in natural materials such as ferns and dirt, is one of her physical offerings she creates from the earth, for the earth. An acknowledgement to it’s boundless beauty and irreplaceable resources”
